Le groupe est formé en 1987 à Chicago (Illinois) par l'association de Billy Corgan, James Iha et D'Arcy Wretzky. Initialement, le groupe joue avec une boîte à rythmes et évolue dans un registre new wave, jusqu'au recrutement de Jimmy Chamberlin. Le nom du groupe a été trouvé par Billy Corgan, qui lors d'un rêve aurait entendu cette phrase : « Joe Strummer is a drank and smashing pumpkins ». Le groupe sort en 1991 son premier album, Gish (en référence à l'actrice de cinéma muet Lillian Gish)
