OneRepublic s'est formé en 2002 à Colorado Springs (Colorado) sous l'impulsion de Ryan Tedder (chant, piano, guitare) et Zach Filkins (guitare). Relocalisé à Los Angeles, le duo engage Drew Brown (claviers), Brent Kutzle (basse) et Eddie Fisher (batterie). En 2003, le groupe décroche un contrat chez Sony BMG. Au bout de trois ans, la major lui rend son contrat. Repéré sur MySpace, OneRepublic signe ensuite sur le label Mosley Music Group tenu par Timbaland.
