La famille Van Halen a émigré en 1962 de Nimègue aux Pays-Bas à Pasadena en Californie. Le père de Eddie et Alex, Jan Van Halen était un saxophoniste et clarinettiste accompli. Jan et sa clarinette jouent d'ailleurs dans la chanson Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now) de l'album Diver Down paru en 1982. Jan encouragea très tôt la passion de ses fils pour la musique, ainsi Alex (le plus âgé des frères Van Halen) et Eddie reçurent tous les deux une éducation de piano classique pendant leur enfance.
