The Stranglers est un groupe de rock new wave britannique formé en 1973, qui sera associé au mouvement Punk puis New Wave. A son origine il est composé de quatre membres : Hugh Cornwell (chant, guitare), le franco-britannique Jean-Jacques Burnel (chant, basse), Dave Greenfield (claviers) et Jet Black (percussions). Ce groupe, nommé au départ The Guildford Stranglers, nait à l'époque du Punk britannique caractérisé surtout par les groupes tels les Sex Pistols ou encore les Clash, les Jam et The Damned etc.
