R.E.M. est un groupe de rock américain formé en 1980 par Michael Stipe (chant), Peter Buck (guitare), Mike Mills (basse) et Bill Berry (batterie) En 1980, les quatre membres du groupe sont étudiants à l'Université de Géorgie à Athens, et partagent un goût en commun pour la musique. Ils débutent leur carrière par une tournée dans le sud américain sous le nom R.E.M., initiales de "Rapid Eye Movement". Dès le premier single, Radio Free Europe qui paraît en 1981
