Repères
James Dewitt Yancey, alias Jay Dee ou J Dilla, est né à Detroit le 7 février 1974. Alors qu'il est à l'université, il devient MC et forme le groupe Slum Village avec quelques amis à lui. En 1992, Jay Dee fait la connaissance d'Amp Fiddler qui l'éveille aux nouveaux outils de production. Jay Dee travaille alors avec The Pharcyde, De La Soul ou encore Busta Rhymes et avant de rejoindre l'équipe de producteurs d'A Tribe Called Quest. En 1997, Slum Village sort son premier album.
