Dire Straits est un groupe de rock britannique créé durant l'été 1977 par Mark Knopfler (guitare et chant), David Knopfler (guitare), John Illsley (guitare basse) et Pick Withers (batterie). Leur manager était Ed Bicknell. Le groupe s'est séparé de fait en 1992 bien que le contrat ait pris officiellement fin en 1995. Origine du groupe Mark Knopfler est un journaliste âgé de 27 ans quand son frère David lui présente le bassiste John Illsley.
