Formé en 1988 sous le nom de Scum, c’est en 1992 que le groupe prend le nom d’Amon Amarth, signifiant Mont du Destin (en Sindarin, langue inventée par Tolkien). Ayant la volonté de créer un death influencé par l’imagerie et la mythologie Viking, leur musique en devient épique et mélodique. Très rapidement la formation entre en studio pour enregistrer leur première démo, Thor Arise (jamais sortie à cause des problèmes de son)
